Metrohm – high precision measuring instruments made in Switzerland
Metrohm AG, founded in 1943 by the two engineers Dr. Bertold Suhner and Willi Studer, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of precision instruments for chemical analysis. Because the specific properties of virtually all substances and materials are determined ultimately by their chemical composition, our instruments are to be found in the laboratories of almost all industries, research institutes and official bodies.
At our headquarters in Herisau in the east of Switzerland around 350 employees develop and produce systems for titration, these are ion chromatography, pH and conductivity measurement, voltammetry and stability measurement. Our products are distributed through 40 of our own subsidiaries and a further 40 exclusive representatives around the world; in total, more than 1600 employees work for us worldwide. To provide them with training in service and support and also in the use and sales of our instruments, we lately founded the Metrohm Academy, which is also used for congresses and customer events.
Metrohm is a problem-solver in the true sense of the word – both in the laboratory and within the industrial process. That means that we offer each customer a customized solution, including not simply the instrument but also the required application know-how. To this end our chemists are continuously developing new applications and methods, publishing them in relevant trade journals thereby opening up new solutions to our customers. Current examples include research in the fields of electrically powered vehicles and alternative drive systems as well as the expanding field of environmental analysis, where our instruments and applications make it possible to detect substances such as toxic heavy metals right down to trace and ultra-trace levels.
In a highly competitive, price-sensitive market, we differentiate ourselves by the quality and technical innovation of our products. 25% of our employees at the company headquarters in Herisau work in research and development, and here especially in software development, electronics and design. This breadth in development is matched by the exceptional manufacturing depth of our in-house production. From the thick-film hybrid PCB and the entire range of mechanical components through to user software we develop and produce everything ourselves.
Another feature that distinguishes Metrohm from most of its competitors, some of which are considerably larger than us, is the fact that the company has been owned 100% by the non-profit Metrohm Foundation since 1982. The Metrohm Foundation, which does not exert any influence on the company’s business operations, sponsors gifted pupils in the natural sciences, supports charitable and philanthropic purposes in the east of Switzerland and, above all, ensures the independence of the company.
