EMC2024 is the 17th European Microscopy Congress, taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark from Sunday 25 August to Friday 30 August, featuring more than 100 exhibitors and the Corner for smaller enterprises, start-ups and open science

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to EMC24, taking place from Sunday 25 August – Friday 30 August 2024.

EMC2024 is the 17th congress and will bring the world of scientific imaging together in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities – Copenhagen, Denmark.

Incorporating a balanced congress programme of light and electron microscopy in both physical and life sciences – microscopists, manufacturers and suppliers will come together to share new and exciting techniques, applications and technology.

The EMC24 will take place at Bella Center, Center Boulevard 5, 2300 Copenhagen, Denmark, and will feature pre-congress workshops and an opening reception on Sunday 25 August.

On Monday 26 August, Eva Olsson, IFSM president, will give the opening address followed by Professor Carolyn Larabell as the first plenary speaker. The following days will feature Professor Claus Ropers, Professor Emma Lundberg, Professor Vincenzo Grillo and Professor Moritz Helmstaedter as morning plenary speakers. The congress will continue with six parallel sessions and will close with drinks in the Poster and Exhibition area. The last day of the congress will conclude with a farewell reception.

The main symposia include Life Science (chair, Eija Jokitalo), Physical Science (chair, Jakob Wagner) and Instrumentation and Methodology (chairs, Julia Fernandez-Rodriguez and Randi Holmestad) – all session topics are described on the conference homepage. Early bird registration is open until 6 July 2024. Ongoing fundraising will attempt to fund as many travel bursaries (€400) as possible for young students and technicians.

The exhibition is one the largest of its kind featuring more than 100 exhibitors including smaller enterprises, start-ups and open science. 80% of the available exhibition space has already been reserved. Day passes will be available to visit the exhibition only.

The congress will, among other topics, address a range of microscopy-related subjects, such as dynamic interactions in cells, organoids, tissue and entire organisms, pathology, immunocytochemistry and biomolecular labelling, volume electron microscopy in life sciences, semiconductors, heterostructures and devices, geological materials and bio-mineral systems, quantum materials, advances in 3-dimensional image reconstruction, new instrumentation and dynamic studies using micro-nano labs.

To highlight the importance of micrographs, EMC2024 will host the Scientific Imaging Competition. Accordingly, submissions are open for our conference registrants. Micrographs need not be related to research or to any paper or topic presented at the conference. Submissions may be purely for their aesthetical beauty and ability to excite curiosity.The competition is open to anyone with an interest in microscopy, and all entries will be evaluated by the delegates. Whoever has the highest score will be selected the winner!

At EMC2024 we promote Open Science: encouraging you to showcase and share your Open Science Methodology, Source, Data and Educational Resources, such as image data sets, acquisition methods and image analysis tools that you would like to share with the community.

We have made available a limited number of stands for scientists to showcase their newly developed tools.

There will be plenty of opportunities to network at the welcome reception on Sunday 25 August, and during the poster and exhibition sessions every afternoon.

On the evening of Monday 26 August, we invite you to take part in a most enjoyable event, the DHL Relay, which can be done as a run or a walk.

On Thursday 29 August you are cordially invited to join the traditional gala dinner where the High T Big Band will set the scene for an enjoyable evening. You can look forward to a versatile 18-strong orchestra that will be playing music from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Don’t miss out on this chance to hear the classics from crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr.
