Lab Automation

The pharmaceutical sector is characterised by intricate processes, stringent regulations and a constant demand for innovation. However, the industry’s digital transformation is hindered by the prevalence of legacy machinery, which often poses compatibility challenges when deploying new technology. COPA-DATA, explains the method of standardisation to remove the barriers of integration of legacy equipment in labs and production lines.

Manufacturing

Drug administration by inhalation is an established technique for treating respiratory and systemic diseases. Effective drug delivery to the lungs requires the aerosolisation and dispersion of a formulation into particles or droplets in the inhalable size range, typically an aerodynamic diameter below 5µm. In many cases, particle engineering is used to optimise a formulation for efficacy.

After assessing the various routes of drug administration, oral delivery stands out as the safest and, as a result, the most universally accepted among patients. Single-unit dosage forms, including tablets followed by capsules, have been identified as the preferred designs for immediate or modified release formulations.

Refeyn discuss the challenges associated with AAV manufacture, the key analytical techniques currently used to facilitate insight into AAV samples and novel techniques striving to overcome current limitations.

By seamlessly integrating a dynamic MES into digitisation roadmaps, companies have achieved greater operational efficiency, data integrity and harnessed real-time insights to meet their strategic goals.

IPT caught up with Peter O’Toole, president of the Royal Microscopy Society, to hear how his first few months of presidency have gone, his plans for the Society and how the field of microscopy might develop over the next few years.

IPT talks to Yama Abassi at Agilent about immunology and cell-analysis and how these will develop in the future.

Digital

While still in its infancy, it is estimated that both AR and VR will surpass 100 million users worldwide by 2027. In realising this trend, it is clear that organisations adopting AR/VR app development services to create immersive experiences for their users to excel within the realm of healthcare.

Ensuring a robust foundation of performance metrics to underpin a strategy is key to navigating the challenges and getting fit for growth. However, amid firefighting to overcome day-to-day challenges, knowing where to start in setting KPIs and finding the right ways to track, measure and analyse them to glean actionable insights can often be a minefield that is easily side-lined.

In the UK, one in 50 adults is living with a chronic wound, leading to more than £8bn in healthcare costs in 2017/2018. However, these numbers are likely to be higher since the pandemic as a result of reduced care in 2020 and 2021, impacting patient outcomes.

Discovery & Development

The World Health Organization has recognised the scarcity of new antimicrobial agents in the clinical pipeline. The prevailing approach to combating antimicrobial resistance cannot solely rely on developing new drugs. Instead, we must seek ways to better understand and more efficiently use the drugs already at our disposal.

Regulars

This issue of IPT looks at the important topics of the day, from AI to antimicrobial resistance, and it also includes an interview with Peter O’Toole, president of the RMS.

Highlighting the end of year events for 2023 and looking ahead at events in early 2024, IPT’s events page covers the best of the sector’s conferences.
