Schiphol as a Pharma Hub
Pharmaceuticals and medical equipment are critical to the cargo volume at Schiphol Airport, playing a pivotal role in both global trade and healthcare delivery. With a strategic location and world-class facilities, Schiphol has become one of Europe’s leading hubs for the transport of life-saving medicines and medical devices.
A key factor in achieving this certainly was Pharma Gateway Amsterdam, a collaborative initiative that brought together logistics providers, customs, and regulatory authorities to streamline and enhance pharmaceutical cargo handling. The airport’s adherence to stringent standards such as Good Distribution Practice (GDP) ensures that pharmaceutical products are safely and efficiently stored, transported, and delivered while maintaining their integrity.
Schiphol’s PGA community members certification program for IATA CEIV Pharma program further underscored its commitment to the highest quality in pharma logistics. This certification ensures that pharmaceutical shipments pass through an environment equipped with temperature-controlled facilities, qualified personnel, and robust tracking systems, essential for the sensitive nature of these goods.
In 2020, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment accounted for a significant portion of Schiphol’s cargo, with the demand for COVID-19 vaccines highlighting the airport’s vital role. Whether it’s vaccines, medical devices, or essential medications, Schiphol’s community expertise in pharma logistics ensures that these critical goods are handled with precision, helping meet global healthcare needs and reinforcing its status as a key international cargo hub.
